A Piece of History
Matilda Catamarans (Matilda) is a 100% Australian owned and operated business. Sailing Sydney Harbour since 1984, Matilda was originally derived from the purchase and merger of two privately owned and operated companies.
Following this merger Matilda focused towards operating charter cruises to the mass market with it’s motorised catamarans. In the early 1990’s owner Tim Lloyd branched into commuter ferries with the advert of the Rocket fleet. In 1997 Lloyd built three state of the art, high speed, low wash super rockets for fast sightseeing cruises and commuter ferry services.
In 1997 Amalgamated Holdings Limited (AHL) one of Australia’s entertainment, hospitality and tourism and leisure companies acquired Matilda Cruises followed by Sail Venture Cruises, which
was purchased in 1998, making Matilda the largest operator of Private Charter vessels on Sydney Harbour. AHL’s focus was to gain maximum revenue across all areas of tourism.
In November 2005, after deciding they would focus on their core business brands, AHL sold Matilda to Captain Cook Cruises, the family-owned small ship cruise operator on Sydney Harbour since 1970. Owned by the Haworth Family, Captain Cook Cruises took advantage of this great opportunity to diversify their product range and add the 10 Matilda Catamarans to their existing fleet of 9 small ship cruise vessels on Sydney Harbour, bringing it to a total of 19 vessels with a combined carrying capacity of over 4,500 passengers.
