Welcome to the home page for Bermuda Charters. Please take a moment to explore our site and learn about our fabulous charter yacht “AJ’s Wings”, as well as discovering the fascinating history, scenery and culture of the paradise that is Bermuda.
AJ’s Wings is one of Bermuda’s newest charter yachts and is captained by Anthony Mello, a prominent Bermuda captain with over 4 decades of seafaring experience, including countless Atlantic crossings.
Our Senior Captain, Anthony Mello was born in Bermuda and has been around boats for all of his life.
He underwent extensive training with the US Coast Guard for Search and Rescue, and during the 70’s worked with the Bermuda Police on all of Bermuda’s search and rescue operations, as well as performing as a volunteer fireman.
Anthony personally built several racing boats and won Bermuda’s Round the Island Powerboat Race twice. He also raced powerboats against top US race boat drivers, winning the Marlboro 400 – Bermuda’s first International Powerboat Race in the 1970’s.
Over the years Anthony has worked with many celebrities including Margaret Thatcher, Michael Jackson, McCauley Caulkin, Lord Martonmere (former Governor of Bermuda) and Italian Prime Minister – Berlusconi. For over 20 years he has provided Captain and Marine management services for Ross Perot who maintains a residence in Bermuda.
He dove and worked with the film crew on the movie “The Deep” including world renowned diver Teddy Tucker and The Author Peter Benchly, and held a 5 year world record for catching a 145lb Blue Marlin on 20lb test fishing line.
Anthony had a close call during Hurricane Emily in 1987, when the boat he was on sank. He was finally rescued after being in the sea for an hour, and during Bermuda’s next big Hurricane (Fabian) in 2003 we lost our original charter yacht when she broke from her moorings and was broken apart on the rocks.
Anthony holds an open water pilot license for ships with a draft of up to 17’ and has done many ocean crossing and boat deliveries for a variety of clients. In fact when our new charter yacht “AJ’s Wings” was purchased in Florida, Anthony, his sister, daughter and a friend sailed it the 1100 miles from Florida to Bermuda in stormy seas, arriving safely after an arduous 8 day journey.
In short, Bermuda Charters has a lifetime of experience to offer you coupled with a true love of the ocean and all things nautical. We hope that you will be able to join us soon on your very own Bermuda Charter.
About Bermuda
One of the most enjoyable aspects of operating Bermuda Charters is our location… the wonderful islands of Bermuda. Notice that we say islands, because Bermuda is actually a collection of tiny islands, that have been joined together over the centuries. There were originally over 300, some as small as a single house, but today the majority comprise the “mainland” of Bermuda.
Our yacht is normally based in the center of the island, which gives us easy access to all of Bermuda by water. As one travels west from Hamilton Harbour the islands of the Great Sound offer wonderful vistas and the “fish hook” shape of Western Bermuda shelters the Great Sound from the Ocean Swells.
Toward the western end of Bermuda the twin clock towers of the Royal Naval Dockyard are a spectacular landmark. Stopping for lunch and exploring the fortifications, built in the heyday of the British Empire, is a fascinating experience.
Sailing around the Western tip brings us to the Southern shores of Bermuda where the beaches are some of the most spectacular in the world. The coral reefs are at their closest point to Bermuda on the South shore and as a consequence we pay particular attention to the wind and weather conditions before choosing this direction if our guests are not seasoned deep water sailors.
