The cruising area of Desolation Sound is only a 4-6 hour passage from our charter base. Many experienced yachtsmen regard the Desolation Sound area as not only the most beautiful and varied cruising area in British Columbia, but equal to, if not better than, any other area in the world. Many charterers also explore close by Toba Inlet, Princess Louisa Inlet, and cruise north to the Broughton Archipelago.

Warm summer temperatures and the meeting of the tides jointly cause the Comox-Desolation Sound region to enjoy the mildest climate, richest sea life and warmest water on the British Columbia coast. Water temperatures in the Sound often exceed 75°F (22°C) from June through September and warm, dry weather conditions are dominant in these months.

OUR BASE IN COMOX

Our town of Comox is located about mid-way on Vancouver Island’s east coast and is easily accessible by land, sea or air. No matter which way you choose to travel, you’ll be sure to enjoy the view along the way!

We are only 24 nautical miles from the Desolation Sound cruising grounds. The Comox area, referred to as the Comox Valley, and central Vancouver Island across to Desolation Sound, is a coastal marine environment with warm, dry summers and short, mild winters. The coldest month is January (not very cold!) and the warmest is usually July with average daily temperatures ranging from 70°F to 80°F. Comox and the Strait of Georgia are protected from rainstorms by the Vancouver Island mountain range, which deflects precipitation and causes a rain shadow throughout the area. The average rainfall is minimal from May to September ~ May 1.5″; June 1.4″; July 1.1″; August 1.7″; & September 2.0″.

Southern British Columbia boasts one of North America’s most spectacular wilderness coasts, a coastline studded with islands and secluded beaches. Many of the islands along the coast are home to bald eagles and hundreds of species of seabirds, as well as marine mammals including the Dall’s porpoise, Pacific white spotted dolphin, and of course the killer (Orca) whales. For sailors and power boaters this intricate coastline with winding channels and mountain fjords is a cruising paradise. The anchorages are sheltered; the weather is excellent; the scenery diverse and access to cruising is readily available.
